As August came to its end and the Turbine Art Fair rolled away in distant memory, Lerato Motaung gave me an unexpected call. ‘Morena Mmutle, ‘ he intoned after exchanging customary salutations amongst colleagues who have long established a rapport. ‘Navel Seakamela and myself would like to know if you are available to meet with us laboraro e etlang? I mused a little bit about my availability a week from then. I had a slot. ‘My Wednesday is open’ I replied. At the back of my mind the interview that you have just listen to or are about to listen to gestated. What if I had a sit-down with bataki ba babedi ba without having anything in particular to discuss except to get us to reflect on the past few years? ‘Ke a leboga, se re tla bonana beke e e tlang’ (Thank you, we will see you next week), Motaung responded appreciatively, so did I with my mind marvelling at the gestating idea. We hung up. Gentlemanly on the eve of this interview I alerted the two artists that I would like to do an unprepared interview with them. This Blank Canvas edition was born.
